Golf Fitness and Nutrition

Being in good physical condition is essential to playing your best golf. J.L. has a routine that includes strength training, stretching, yoga and aerobics. To get the best results he follows each workout with a day off. J.L. does a 20 minute yoga routine on days off from strength training and 20 to 40 minutes of aerobics.

My sample workout routine is:

Monday: Upper body strength training, active stretching
Tuesday: 20 minute yoga routine, 20 to 40 minutes of aerobics
Wednesday: Lower body and abdominal strength training,
active stretching
Thursday: 20 minute yoga routine, 20 to 40 minutes of aerobics
Friday: Upper body strength training, active stretching
Saturday: 20 minute yoga routine, 20 to 40 minutes of aerobics

Sunday: Lower body and abdominal strength training,
active stretching

It is important to have full range of motion in the upper body for the optimum golf swing. Experiment with the amount of upper body strength training needed so that you remain strong but not too bulky that it affects the range of motion in your swing. Taking a day off periodically enhances my performance.

Physical Therapists

Consistent visits to therapist can be very beneficial for a professional athlete.  J.L. has found that working with a therapist on a regular basis allows him to play in more events and be pain free more often which enables him to perform at his best. Physical Therapy fixes problems before they become chronic issues. Find a good physical therapist and work with them to enhance your performance.

Therapists J.L. has worked with:

  • Mike Leahy, ART (Active Release Technique) – Soft Tissue Repair
  • Brent Voth, North Star Manual Therapy – Soft Tissue Repair
  • Hart Peterson, Applied Chiropractic
  • Dr. Bob Meyers, Chiropractic
  • Paul Hendricks, Chiropractic
  • PGA TOUR Fitness Van

Nutrition is a very important aspect of health and performance on and off the golf course.  A healthy body will allow you to perform you best on many levels; physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.  J.L. and Dawn follow an alkalinizing diet that consists of nutrient dense foods such as organic fruits and vegetables, organic fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, nuts, fish and other foods high in Omega 3 and 6 oils, lean meats, and mineral rich water.   We try to avoid saturated fats, fried foods, preservatives, processed foods, and table salt, and we limit our intake of caffeine, dairy, and processed sugar. J.L. eats essential snack foods on the golf course consisting of fruits, nuts, food bars, organic fresh squeezed juices, and plenty of water. We supplement with Molecular Fitness vitamins and minerals and have made every effort to follow the Molecular Fitness Lifestyle, based on the disease prevention research of Dr. Darrell Tanelian M.D., PH.D., for the past seven years.

In recent months we have also incorporated an organic juicing program which complements the alkaline based Molecular Fitness program.  We have found that by implementing a well planned juicing program we can reduce the amount of cooked foods while increasing more raw foods into our diet.  We have been consulting with Arnold Van Den Berg, President/Founder of Century Management, who has incorporated an organic juicing program in his personal and professional life.  We are experimenting with the benefits of certain juices for enhanced performance on the golf course.

J.L.'s Nutrition Program:
