PGA TOUR Viking Classic Golf Tournament

November 2009

The PGA TOUR heads to Jackson, Mississippi this week for the Viking Classic held at Annandale Golf Club. The event takes place late in the year and provides one of the last opportunities for players to secure their playing privileges for 2010. Those who finish in the top 125 on the year end money list are fully exempt on the PGA TOUR for the following year.

This added pressure can be a distraction that must be overcome to play well. Some players will prevail and others may not qualify. For the players who fall short it's off to PGA TOUR qualifying school for a final shot at a PGA TOUR card. This situation can be both stressful and grueling both physically and mentally. The players that can set the future aside and stay present, focused on playing each shot to the best of their ability will do well.

Annandale Golf Club has been around since 1906, and includes a mix of left and right dogleg holes and good par 3s. The greens are tiered and very fast to make long putting and shots around the greens extremely challenging. The wind and rain that is often present can cause conditions to be even tougher for scoring. The winning scores will be determined by the weather. Three to five under par per day is good for a top 5 finish in the tournament.

The Viking Classic is the first stop on the tour where players begin to see the changing fall colors in the trees. The city of Jackson is a southern experience of culture, food and architecture that reminds me of southern hospitality where everyone is greeted with a smile. Jackson is rich with history. The city was burned down three times during the Civil War. It was renamed after President Andrew Jackson. Jackson hosts the World Class USA International Ballet Competition at the beautiful municipal auditorium, Thalia Mara Hall. Jackson also has the 10th largest planetarium, the Russell C. Davis Planetarium. Jackson is a nice town to spend the week in for the Viking Classic.
